Juan Mata got United off to an excellent start when the Spaniard was on hand to tap home from close range in the 12th minute following some good work from Antonio Valencia down the right.
However, summer signing Jack Rodwell levelled things up before half time when he was left unmarked in the area to head home past David De Gea.
The draw leaves Louis van Gaal with just one point from his opening two games following last weeks opening day defeat to Swansea at Old Trafford.
